To become a Consultant in the UK (able to practice independently) you must first gain entrance on to the Specialist Register. Entry onto the Specialist Register is a legal requirement to appointment for those wishing to gain a substantive or honorary consultant post in the NHS. |
The Register is maintained by the General Medical Council (GMC). The Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) has the statutory responsibility for deciding whether doctors are eligible to be included in the Specialist Register.
There are two ways to do this.
- Completion of a type 1 training programme leading to a CCT
- Assessment of training, qualifications and experience leading to the award of a CESR (Article 14)
Entry onto the Specialist register does not guarantee you will be able to find employment as a consultant.
