RCOG Consumers’ Forum Public Lecture: Living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Webcast

Overview

In March 2009 Professor Adam Balen, Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospital, presented a lecture on behalf of the RCOG Consumers Forum entitled ‘Living with PCOS’.  Aimed chiefly at members of the public, it covered issues such as diagnosing PCOS, treating its symptoms, achieving successful pregnancies, and managing the condition.

Professor Adam Balen says: "Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects up to 15-20 percent of women, and is one of the leading causes of fertility problems in women. It is essential for health care professionals to understand how this condition cuts across many medical specialties and therefore requires a holistic approach to management. PCOS is associated with a range of health problems and may have a significant effect on the quality of life of women of all ages"

Mrs Gillian Baker, RCOG Consumer's Forum Chair, says: "While PCOS cannot be cured, there are a number of ways to reduce the long-term health risks associated with PCOS. Women need relevant and up-to-date information about this condition so that they can make lifestyle changes, access support, and lead healthy and fulfilling lives."
