CESR (CP)

What is the CESR (CP) route to specialist registration?

CESR (CP) is the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration - Combined Programme. This is the route for trainees who have been appointed above ST1 level to Deanery and GMC-approved training programmes from August 2007 onwards, who at point of entry to the programme wish to count time spent in previous non-GMC approved posts. The CESR (CP) route allows a defined amount of time in non-GMC approved posts to count towards specialist registration. The amount of time spent in non-GMC approved posts may vary. It may be as short as 3-6 months in basic training, but could include several years of experience in other countries. The School/Deanery will need to assess and confirm that the previous experience is suitable to count towards Specialist Registration. The award of CESR (CP) will allow the applicant to be recommended to the GMC for Specialist Registration in the same way as a trainee on the CCT route. Trainees will be able to apply to work as substantive consultants in the UK.

Transitional arrangements, August 2007 - July 2010
Several trainees are already in the system who have been appointed from August 2007 onwards and who do not have 100% of their prior training in GMC approved posts. It is this small cohort we would like to identify at this stage. The College has asked that trainees in this position complete this form (Word document) and submit to Tania Chambers c/o the Postgraduate Training Department by 22nd September 2010.

Prospective arrangements, August 2010 onwards
A new process for managing trainees on the CESR (CP) route has been agreed from August 2010. Advice for Heads of Schools and trainees can be found here, and the RCOG enrolment form can be found here.

CESR Application Process

  • On appointment to a numbered training post the trainee will complete the  CESR form in order to count prior experience in non-GMC approved posts.
  • On receipt of the CESR form the RCOG will confirm the CESR CP route and issue a ‘provisional letter of enrolment’ in which the projected end date will be confirmed.
  • After the first ARCP the Deanery will confirm in writing to the RCOG whether the initial appointment level was appropriate.
  • The RCOG Specialty Education Advisory Committee will review the Deanery submission and issue the ‘final letter of enrolment’ which will confirm the projected end date for training.
  • The trainee will need to retain a copy of the ‘final letter of enrolment’ since this documentation will be required at the time of CESR application to the GMC.
