For some ATSMs attendance at courses is either mandatory or highly recommended. The RCOG will provide information regarding suitable course content for each ATSM. Attendance at mandatory courses remains a requirement of completion of ATSMs.
The theoretical course syllabus which has been produced in conjunction with either the specialist societies or the ATSM lead has been added to each ATSM. This syllabus covers the minimum requirements that a course should include for it to be suitable for an ATSM. Hospitals and groups are welcome to run courses that are suitable for ATSMs and the course content should mirror the recommendations available from the RCOG. However, the RCOG does not require that courses are formally submitted for approval. It is accepted that with appropriate content, local courses will enable trainees to gain the knowledge or practical requirements for their ATSM.
The responsibility for assisting a trainee to review the syllabus and select a suitable course lies with the ATSM preceptor (of the relevant ATSM).
The College cannot offer any assistance with the selection process for courses other than to advise on courses run at or by the College, which it will continue to ensure are suitable for ATSMs.

Although ATSM trainees register and undertake training prospectively, trainees can attend the required courses at any stage in the final 3 years of their training ie 3 years before CCT. Course attendance is only valid for 3 years towards completion of the ATSM.
