In 2008 the RCOG introduced new guidelines to support centres delivering RCOG branded courses. The purpose of the franchising policy is to review and simplify the processes involved in designing, producing and running these courses while at the same time maintaining standards and providing the appropriate guidance to participating centres.
Franchising ensures standards of training are consistent for all participants attending courses and offers the opportunity for skilled Fellows and Members to deliver RCOG conferences at local centres in the UK and overseas. The benefits include:
- Provision of all course material
- RCOG certificate of attendance to all delegates
- Recognised RCOG branded course
- Training for teaching faculty
Franchised Courses
We are continually developing the structure and content of courses for franchising and the following courses are now available:
Basic Practical Skills in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The redeveloped Basic Practical Skills in O&G is the first course to be franchised. The course has been designed to introduce trainees to safe surgical techniques and obstetric clinical skills in a structured workshop environment. The course is standardised to ensure that common objectives, content structure and assessment methods are followed. It is run at the RCOG but can also be run at regional centres provided the necessary requirements in terms of facilities, equipment and faculty are met. This must be confirmed through the submission of the accompanying proposal form to the RCOG, who are responsible for approving the proposals received.
The course consists of 3 modules and covers basic surgical skills and basic skills in obstetrics. The Participant Manual includes a suggested course outline, which covers the three 'modules' (basic open general surgical techniques, obstetric skills, and gynaecological procedures; hysteroscopy and laparoscopy) on three consecutive days.
If you would like to franchise for the Basic Practical Skills course please download the Guidance Notes and Application Form.
