OVERVIEW
This half-day, hands on training course focuses on the outpatient surgical management of miscarriage and therapeutic abortion.
Manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) is an alternative to electric suction or dilatation and curettage for evacuation of the uterine contents following miscarriage and for abortion. The MVA procedure is performed with a hand-operated vacuum syringe, typically under local anaesthetic.
The RCOG curriculum committee works with the Specialty Education Advisory Committee to ensure the curriculum evolves in response to (or in anticipation of) changes in practice. With the high safety profile of this procedure and the increasing potential for the delivery of uterine evacuation in an outpatient setting, there is a need to improve access to this in the UK. The procedure is accessible, easy to deliver, does not require a general anesthetic and is affordable to the NHS. This RCOG/FSRH half-day practical course to cover equipment, the procedure, analgesia and the outpatient setting is for trainers in outpatient uterine surgical evacuation who have not had access to training with this equipment.
