RCOG release: Life Saving Skills Manual wins award!

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) is pleased to announce that the RCOG Press publication Live Saving Skills Manual - Essential Obstetric Care has been awarded First Prize in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology category at this year’s BMA Medical Book Competition.

The Life Saving Skills Manual was developed by RCOG, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Liverpool Associates in Tropical Health (LATH), in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO). The main objective is to provide healthcare professionals with a guide to treating and managing the key obstetric problems facing women in developing countries. Areas covered include treating conditions such as pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, obstructed labour, sepsis and other common obstetric emergencies.

Published in 2006, the manual has proved to be popular and a revised reprint of Life Saving Skills Manual is due in late September 2007. There are also plans to convert the manual into pictorial format to assist users in developing countries.

Professor James Dornan, RCOG Vice President and Chair of the RCOG International Office said, “We are extremely proud of this publication and believe that this manual is a tremendous resource for doctors, midwives and birth attendants working in countries where adequately trained personnel and equipment is often unavailable.”

“We have a long way to go in reducing the one maternal death each minute that result from complications experienced during pregnancy and childbirth and this book is a practical step forward in our commitment to lower maternal mortality worldwide.”

The award was presented to Dr Nynke van den Broek, Director of the RCOG International Office, Beryl Stevens, RCOG Director of Corporate Affairs and Jane Moody, RCOG Head of Publications at a ceremony in BMA House on 12 September.

The award aims to recognise excellence in medical publishing and to encourage the production of high-quality medical books. Prizes are awarded in 26 categories, with an overall BMA Medical book of the year award made from the category winners. All entries are individually reviewed and appraised by doctors and educators who are interested in medical publishing.
