RCOG release: RCOG appoints new Director of Simulation

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) wishes to announce the honorary appointment of Dr Mark Roberts MRCOG as the Director of Simulation. Following the introduction of the new Specialty Training Programme in 2007, and the recent launch of the revised Continuing Professional Development Programme in 2009, the College has decided to develop its resources to support simulated training.

Dr. Roberts will chair the Simulation Advisory Board and will be accompanied by Dr Alison Gale FRCOG, Advisor to the Director of Simulation. Over the first twelve months, the Board will conduct a scoping exercise to establish how the College will further develop simulation opportunities for training and assessment in obstetrics and gynaecology both for trainees, and for Fellows and Members.

Dr. Maggie Blott, RCOG Vice President Education, said “The appointment of the new Director of Simulation reflects an exciting move to enhance training and practical skills through the introduction of simulation training. Dr. Roberts has taken a proactive role in developing and convening the Basic Practical Skills in Obstetrics and Gynaecology course since 2006. The successful development and implementation of the RCOG Basic Practical Skills course is an excellent model for further practical skills courses and simulated training initiatives.”

Dr. Roberts, RCOG Director of Simulation, said “The RCOG runs a number of practical skills and simulation courses, which teach basic skills in a safe environment and enhance a team approach to the care of women. The need to develop simulation training was highlighted in the Chief Medical Officers Report 2009, Safer medical practice: Machines, manikins and polo mints. As Director of Simulation, I hope to work with partners in the NHS and medical industries to establish advanced practical training ranging from complex obstetric scenarios to specialist gynaecological surgery.”
