The 50th Anniversary publication of the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Death ‘Why Mothers Die’ is an extraordinary achievement. This is the most enduring national audit of its kind in the world, and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is proud to be associated with it.
Pregnancy and childbirth is now thankfully much safer than it was 50 years ago thanks to clinical improvements and a heightened awareness among all health care professionals, and credit for this must be given to the contribution of the Enquiry.
The College supports the recommendations set out in the report and will encourage their implementation. We have a continuing responsibility to reach out to vulnerable groups and extend out services to meet their needs.
