Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

An audit of patient outcomes and experience of treatment for women with heavy menstrual bleeding (heavy periods)
Joint project with RCOG, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Ipsos MORI

Two Components:

  • Organisational Audit: A national survey of all NHS Acute Trusts in England and Wales to evaluate current referral patterns, protocols and practice in the management of HMB. (May to September 2010)
  • Audit of patient-reported outcomes: A study of symptoms and health-related quality of life among women who attend outpatient gynaecology clinics with complaints of HMB.
    Baseline questionnaire distributed in clinics (1 February 2011 to 31 January 2012). One-year follow-up questionnaire sent to patients’ homes (February 2012 to February 2013).

Current events

  • The Addendum to the First Annual Report is out! This Addendum looks specifically at patterns of surgical treatment for women with HMB in Wales between 2003-2010. The research shows that women living in the most deprived areas of Wales were more likely to have hysterectomies whilst women in the least deprived areas were more likely to have endometrial ablations.   • Patient data collection (which started on 1 February 2011) will carry on until 31 January 2012; please keep up the good work in this last month of patient recruitment!
  • The National HMB Audit Newsletter is circulated monthly to all staff involved in the Audit. Please find the latest issues below:
