William Blair-Bell Memorial Lectureships in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The subject or subjects of the lectures must be either obstetrics or gynaecology, or closely related thereto. In the selection of the lecturers, preference will be given to lectures based on original work, particularly with regard to the morphology, physiology and pathology of the female reproductive organs but this need not be considered an absolute condition of the appointments, particularly if the alternative be a problem connected with malignant neoplastic disease.

The conditions of these lectureships, according to the original bequest by the first President of the College, are as follows:

  • Two lectures only may be delivered in each year.
  • The lecturers must be either Members of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists or Fellows of not more than two years'' standing by the closing date.
  • The subject or subjects of the lectures must be either obstetrics or gynaecology, or closely related thereto. In the selection of the lecturers, preference will be given to lectures based on original work, particularly with regard to the morphology, physiology and pathology of the female reproductive organs but this need not be considered an absolute condition of the appointments, particularly if the alternative be a problem connected with malignant neoplastic disease.

An honorarium of £200 will be given for the lectures. A contribution towards travelling expenses may be given.

Applications

  • Candidates should indicate what part, if any, of the work submitted has been previously published.
  • An abstract of approximately 600 words should be submitted in typescript on A4 paper (four copies), including prints of any slides. The abstracts must include methodology, results, conclusions and a list of any publications. The College is unable to return the original abstracts and illustrations. The lecture should be suitable for presentation in 45 minutes and be adequately referenced.
  • Successful candidates will be asked to give written permission for their manuscripts to be copied and sent out upon request to Fellows and Members of the College, unless, or until, the paper is published elsewhere.
  • No assessment of any lecture will be made before the closing date for applications.
