Employer/Trust: Kambia Government Hospital
Kambia, Sierra Leone
Volunteer obstetricians, or trainees, are required to work in Kambia district hospital, north west Sierra Leone for 3-6 month periods from July 2012. Free accommodation is available, and transport costs will be subsidised, depending on the duration of stay.
The Kambia Appeal is a UK charity partnering Kambia Hospital and District since 1992. The main aim of the Appeal is to try and improve maternal mortality, in accordance with Millennium Development Goal 5. Sierra Leone has one of the worst maternal mortality ratios in the world.
To this end, we have been providing training, equipment and volunteers, in collaboration with the local District Health Management Team in Kambia. We are in receipt of a major three year grant from the International Health Links Funding Scheme to assist with training and provision of equipment.
A particular need is for specialist obstetricians, or trainees, to raise the standard of obstetric care in the hospital and district.
