Update - July 2011

  • The GMC has recently published two pieces of guidance on doctors' appraisals to make the process simple and straightforward:
  • The guidance sets out how doctors can show that they are meeting the professional standards on which good practice is founded. It also outlines the core information that all doctors will need to bring to their annual appraisal, regardless of where they work in the UK or their area of practice.
  • The GMC has also published a Guidance on colleague and patient questionnaires
  • Revalidation is not expected to roll out until 2012. In the meantime, doctors will need to ensure that they are participating in annual appraisal. If they cannot access appraisal through their workplace, they should contact their Responsible Officer or relevant health board.
  • Responsible Officers have been in place since 1 January 2011.
  • Doctors should make sure that they know who their Responsible Officer is.
  • In late 2011, the GMC will publish guidance on how Responsible Officers should make recommendations to the GMC on relation to revalidation.
