Ethics and medical electives in resource-poor countries - a toolkit

The BMA International and Ethics Departments recently produced guidance for medical students on appropriate behaviour when on medical electives in developing countries. It covers issues such as staying within your competence, dealing with emergencies, and where to seek advice.

With the assistance of Chairs of our International Representative Committees, we have compiled an Elective Register, listing details of possible institutions/hospitals/maternity units that have kindly offered their facilities and the main contact person at the institution. As a result of this initiative, it is hoped that a wide range of placement opportunities could be potentially available to UK medical students in many countries around the world, providing exposure to various procedures in O & G including antenatal, postnatal, high-risk obstetrics, gynaecological surgery, in an alternative setting.
