Proposal Requests for RCOG Educational Products

Commissioning process for all educational products

From 1 January 2011 the College has introduced a new commissioning process for all educational products. The SMARTER model is a centralised process which will combine the work of, and replaces, the Meetings Committee, Publications Management Committee and Education Support Group.

Currently, the development of educational products occurs in several arenas within the College and the aim of the SMARTER model is to unify the product development processes. This model will take forward accepted proposals and coordinate the development of products by:

  • assigning the correct output for the proposed product
  • ensuring standardisation
  • providing high-quality project management
  • ensuring that the proposals support the strategic direction of the College.

What is an RCOG educational product?

RCOG educational products are considered to be:

  • A conference
  • A course (practical, skills, training, workshops)
  • A book
  • A journal, journal supplement, journal article
  • An e-learning module
  • A combination of any of these

What committees will be replaced by the SMARTER model?

This model has replaced the Meetings Committee, Publications Management Committee and Education Support Group, and brings together Officers, key Fellows and Members and specific staff to form a Product Development Executive and Product Management Group.

How often will the two groups meet?

The Product Development Executive (PDE) meets four times a year and communicates regularly via an online special interest group. The Product Development Executive members collaborate with and represent the views of clinical project leads in their respective areas.

The Product Management Group meets monthly to prepare materials for presentation to the Executive.

How long is the decision making process?

The process is flexible but sufficient time must be allowed for a reasoned decision to be made. Proposals will normally be submitted to the Product Development Executive at a quarterly meeting. If a proposal is approved for further consideration, it will pass to the Product Management Group for development. If the need is urgent, these stages may be performed electronically between meetings.

How to submit a product proposal?

This process invites any Fellows and Members, Committees, specialist societies and organisations or member of RCOG staff to submit proposals for RCOG educational products. Please complete all sections of the Educational/Professional Product Proposal form and submit to education@rcog.org.uk.
