This tutorial aims to familiarise you with the basic principles of critical assessment of research evidence on the effects of healthcare interventions.

Please note that this tutorial may go beyond the knowledge required of MRCOG Part 2 candidates, and would also be useful for post-MRCOG trainees and consultants.

Learning objectives

At the end of the tutorial you will have the following competencies:

Knowledge criteria

  • understand the definitions and relevance of levels of evidence
  • understand the development and application of clinical guidelines, integrated care pathways and protocols

Clinical competency

  • be able to critically appraise publications, particularly systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials
  • be able to critically appraise clinical guidelines

Professional skills and attitude

  • be able to discuss the relevance of evidence for a clinical situation
  • be able to show regard for individual patient needs when using guidelines
  • be aware of advantages and disadvantages of guidelines, integrated care pathways and protocols
