Introduction to early pregnancy loss - management

This eTutorial is based on real life scenarios that you will commonly come across in the accident and emergency unit, pregnancy unit and the gynaecology ward. These cases could include threatened, missed and incomplete miscarriages. The eTutorial includes pregnancy of unknown location but not ectopic pregnancy and trophoblastic disease, which are mentioned in separate eTutorials in this module.

Learning objectives

By the end of this eTutorial you should:

  • be more familiar with the appropriate terminology used in this area
  • understand about different types of miscarriage
  • be more familiar with the common presentation of miscarriage
  • be able to recognise stable and unstable patients
  • be able to initiate management of early pregnancy loss
  • be aware of the pros and cons of the different management options
  • be more familiar with the types of questions that women will have who have experienced early pregnancy loss
