This tutorial considers how conditions involving the gastrointestinal (GI) system and liver can influence or be influenced by pregnancy. Some conditions are specific to pregnancy; others are pre-existing and need to be managed in the context of pregnancy including pre-pregnancy counselling.

Learning objectives

On completion of this tutorial you will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the physiological changes that occur in the GI system and liver during pregnancy
  • demonstrate an understanding of how conditions/diseases of the GI system and liver can affect pregnancy
  • demonstrate an understanding of how conditions/diseases of the GI system and liver can be affected by pregnancy
  • describe the principles of investigation and management of conditions/diseases of the GI system and liver in pregnancy
