Introduction to perineal and vaginal surgery

This tutorial will give you an understanding of the anatomy of the vagina and vulva, and how it is applied to vaginal and perineal surgical techniques.

It will also give you an understanding of the basic principles underpinning safe and effective vaginal and perineal surgery; covering some of the procedures employed for the operative treatment of specific vaginal and perineal conditions.

Learning objectives

When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:

  • understand the anatomy, blood and nerve supply of the vaginal introitus and vulva
  • understand the principles of safe and effective vaginal surgery
  • understand the common vulval, vaginal and perineal conditions requiring surgical intervention and the surgical procedures used to treat them
  • have an appreciation of some of the less common procedures carried out in the vagina, perineum and vulva and their indications
