Perioperative trauma is one of the most common obstetric complications related to delivery. It can occur spontaneously in the form of a perineal tear or secondary to an obstetric intervention like operative delivery, which may be either an instrumental delivery or a caesarean section.

Most often the trauma is minor but in some cases may be associated with complications, both immediate and delayed, including rapid deterioration of the clinical condition secondary to haemorrhage or sexual problems. It is therefore important to recognise these complications and manage them appropriately.
