In the 2006–2008 report of the UK Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths, obstetric haemorrhage remained an important cause of maternal death, despite the decline in numbers of cases. Compared with the two previous reports, the number of
deaths from postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) has halved to five cases.

The report also re-emphasised that management of PPH requires the involvement of a skilled multidisciplinary team with the appropriate experience as early as possible.
