This tutorial provides an introduction to the investigation and treatment of psychosexual dysfunction. The tutorial should give you a framework with which to think about the presentation of sexual dysfunction, identify cases where psychological causes predominate, and make decisions about management and referral.

Learning objectives

When you have completed this tutorial you will be able to:

  • explain the anatomy and physiology of the human sexual response
  • describe the nature and presentation of sexual problems
  • outline the principles of psychosexual counselling, and know how these differ according to the different therapeutic approach used
  • understand the ways in which both conscious and unconscious processes contribute to the aetiology of psychosexual dysfunction
  • manage consultations in which psychosexual problems present, both overtly and covertly, to enable patients to verbalise their problems more effectively
  • give brief counselling up to your own level of competency, and use your knowledge of local services to refer patients where appropriate
