This tutorial reviews the factors behind the increased incidence of venous thrombosis, specifically deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in pregnancy and the puerperium. It explains how to make a diagnosis and treat a patient with venothromboembolism and will also cover prevention of thrombosis in high-risk groups.

Learning objectives

By the end of this tutorial you will be able to:

  • understand the epidemiology, pathophysiology and risk factors in venothromboembolism in pregnancy
  • diagnose venothromboembolism in pregnancy by clinical assessment and organisation of appropriate investigations
  • appropriately treat a pregnant or postpartum woman with confirmed venothromboembolism
  • understand who needs to be given thromboprophylaxis to prevent venothromboembolism.
