RCOG statement on the Teenage Pregnancy Independent Advisory Group Annual Report 2008/09

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) welcomes the Teenage Pregnancy Independent Advisory Group (TPIAG) Annual Report 2008/09. The report reviews the implementation of the Government’s Teenage Pregnancy Strategy and outlines key recommendations for progress.

The RCOG supports the recommendations contained in the report. In particular, the report highlights the importance of Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), and the need to address geographical variations in access to contraception and sexual health services.

The RCOG welcomes the Government’s recent decision to make Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education, including Sex and Relationships Education (SRE), a statutory subject in schools. SRE plays a vital role in providing young people with skills and information to negotiate relationships, protect their sexual health and prevent unwanted pregnancy.

Access to sex education, a full range of reversible contraception and sexual health services remains critical to reducing teenage pregnancy and to improving young people’s health and wellbeing.
