The MRCOG is probably the most important international postgraduate examination in obstetrics and gynaecology. It is recognised and valued as a measure of ability. Members of the College are to be found in every continent, often as leaders of the profession in their countries.
This book is an essential guide to examination. Major changes have been made in response to the new Specialty Training and Education Programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. A new curriculum and syllabus for both the Part 1 and Part 2 MRCOG examinations have been developed. Details of this new curriculum and syllabuses and their impact upon the examinations, are included in this volume. There is also a chapter on the significance of the Membership examination in a global context and the reasons for its continued popularity among candidates.
The book is divided into chapters which focus on the individual components of the examination. Concepts such as the standard setting and blueprinting of examinations are explained in detail, in addition to accounts of newly introduced formats such as extended matching questions (EMQs) and the evolution of the essay questions into short-answer questions (SAQs) in Part 2.
Most importantly, this book will assist candidates with their revision for the examinations and provides vital information on how to obtain a pass.

The written paper for the Part 2 MRCOG examination is undergoing significant change. Extended matching questions (EMQs) are being introduced as a component of the written paper from September 2006 onwards. The purpose of the change is to develop a format of testing which would probe a candidate’s understanding of the subject, enable adequate coverage of the syllabus and increase the objectivity of marking.
Both of the authors have served on the Part 2 EMQ Sub-committee of the RCOG from its foundation, working with colleagues in order to develop, discuss, debate and refine EMQs for the Part 2 examination.

This book is written for trainees in all subjects related to health. Research-orientated questions are incorporated into the majority of Royal College membership examinations; for example, in the OSCE station a research study or paper has to be criticised.
The first edition of this book sold out in record time and whilst this second edition has the qualities of the previous it is now updated to be highly relevant to the research of today and tomorrow.
Because of the nature of the editors' posts and their contacts there is naturally an emphasis on the specialist registrar trainee in obstetrics and gynaecology and many of the writers and thus the examples in the text are obstetric and gynaecological, however physicians, surgeons, midwives and nurses could readily use the book.
