The PROMPT (PRactical Obstetrics Multi-Professional Training) multiprofessional training course covers the management of a range of obstetric emergency situations, which fulfils all the requirements of the maternity standards for CNST levels 2 and 3.
Each subject is presented in a variety of formats to stimulate the interests of participants: interactive lectures with time for discussion and opportunities to draw from the participants' own clinical experience of actual emergency situations; interactive drills and workshops provide 'hands on' experience of practical skills and decision making in simulated obstetric emergency situations. Teamwork and training for communication in an emergency and many useful tips are included.
The ultimate goals of training are to improve clinical outcomes and to reduce patient safety incidents. The PROMPT course has been evaluated and has been found to be associated with improved clinical outcomes. Of course, a team is only as strong as its weakest link so it is important that all staff are trained. A locally run course easily allows 100% of staff to be trained within a short period.
This book is the Course Manual for the PROMPT course. It is essential reading for all attendees (who should read it before participating in the course) and will also provide much useful information for any health profession wishing to understand more about training for obstetric emergencies.

The second edition of this popular course manual will provide readers with a structured revision system for managing the sick and seriously injured. The system, known as the structured approach is the ABC of resuscitation and trauma life support and is practised not only throughout all walks of medicine and the emergency services but is familiar to the lay public and a concept known even to schoolchildren.
This manual is recommended reading prior to the Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma (MOET) course and contains essential knowledge for emergency obstetrics and trauma: it is based on sound principles, is easy to read and gives useful practical advice and management plans.

Each year, more than 500 000 women worldwide die from complications of pregnancy and childbirth – one every minute. Many more survive but will suffer ill health and disability as a result of these complications. At least 80% of deaths result from five complications that are well understood and can be readily treated. We know how to prevent these deaths – there are existing effective medical and surgical interventions that are relatively inexpensive. This manual is structured around the leading causes of maternal mortality and the delivery of basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric care. It is meant for use by all those healthcare providers who mainly work in resource-poor settings, trying to save lives in sometimes very difficult situations, including midwives, clinical officers, medical assistants and doctors.
