A Career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology - Recruitment and Retention in the Specialty

This report examines career choice in obstetrics and gynaecology and identifies the reasons for the current downturn in recruitment. Workforce planning, undergraduate experience, life–work issues and future consultant responsibilities were identified as the main factors associated with career choice and recruitment. A number of recommendations have been made, some of which are already being implemented. A role for the RCOG in addressing the problem is suggested, with particular respect to the UK medical schools, specialist training, as well as workforce and lifestyle considerations. A key recommendation is the suggestion that the College should establish a national network of Career Mentors in obstetrics and gynaecology. A sustained effort is needed with constant awareness of new issues and priorities. Each individual specialist has a role to play if obstetrics and gynaecology is to thrive and serve the needs of women’s health care in the future.
