Question:
What is the risk of cervical cancer in a woman with a smear showing mild dyskaryosis with normal and adequate/ satisfactory colposcopy in the age group of 20 - 25 and 25 -30 years?
Answer:
In a retrospective study of 2157 women with mild dyskariosis or borderline nuclear changes and normal initial colposcopy (1), high-grade or invasive disease was diagnosed histologically in 35.8% of 1352 women referred with mild dyskaryosis. Among 620 women with normal colposcopy and a negative or borderline repeat smear, high-grade disease was found after 5 years of follow up in 8.5% of women referred because of mild dyskaryosis. Age had no effect on these results. (Evidence level III)
