The MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment Sub-Committee/Workshop is responsible for setting the questions and providing relevant question material for the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment, which is held twice a year.
The Committee members are responsible for producing new tasks, collaboratively reviewing other members’ tasks and fulfilling the role of Lead Briefer when examining at MRCOG Part 3 examinations.
The committee meets four times a year in person/remotely.
This appointment is for three-year term beginning in May 2025 and will be appointed by application and online interview.

Task information
To ensure that we are able to choose dedicated committee members with enthusiasm and the correct skillset we are using a question writing task to help judge the applicants in a fair and transparent way.
The task is to write a draft task for the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment, using the task template MRCOG Part 3 task template below. This should be a task on any one of the 14 domains in the MRCOG Part 3 curriculum and should take the form of a Simulated Patient Task that will be examined by a clinical examiner only. You can use any domain that you are familiar with.

Role description
MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment Sub-Committee Fellow/Member Representative

Three years, commencing May 2024
- Attend committee meetings regularly. If two meetings in succession are missed, the Sub-Committee member must write to the Sub-Committee Chair to explain their absence, and they may be dropped from the Sub-Committee at the Chair’s discretion.
- Produce new tasks prior to the meeting and submit them to the Chair in advance of the meeting. Annually, task-writing performance will be reviewed by the Sub-Committee Chair and Vice Chair, should there be concerns about the number of tasks submitted to the item bank the member may be dropped from the Sub-Committee at the Chair’s discretion.
- Review the performance of the tasks following the examinations.
- Edit tasks in committee or review other members’ tasks prior to meetings.
- Be aware of the standard setting processes and be involved if required.
- Be involved in the blueprinting of the examination and its sub-sections.
- Be involved in training sessions for new examiners, as required.
- Recommend books and references for use by the Sub-Committee in formulating new tasks.
- Fulfil the role of Task Lead Briefer when examining at MRCOG Part 3 examinations.
It is expected that the successful candidate will work closely with all Sub-Committee members, Vice Chair and Chair in order to ensure that the quality of the performance of the MRCOG Part 3 exam is maintained.
There will be around four committee meetings a year, of which members will attend at least three. Members will also be available to assist with MRCOG examinations each year at the various centres. A minimum of two days per examination is requested.
This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.
The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term.
Membership will be allocated by geographical location and special interest in order to maintain an appropriate balance for the Committee. The principles of Equality and Diversity best practice apply to all College Committee appointments.

Essential
- FRCOG/MRCOG
- Currently practising in the UK
- Registered with a licence to practice with GMC or Irish Medical Council, in good standing
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register and CCT
- Generalist with a special interest, or specialist with broad-based generalist background
- Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and assessment
- Demonstration of involvement in personal CPD

- Active or previous participation in assessment and writing of relevant types of examination questions
Essential
- Current MRCOG examiner
- Able to maintain confidentiality and security
- Previous term on an Examinations Committee (DRCOG Sub-Committee, MRCOG Part 1 Sub-Committee, MRCOG Part 2 SBA Sub-Committee, MRCOG Part 2 EMQ Sub-Committee, Standard Setting Sub-Committee)
- Punctuality and ability to complete tasks/questions by prescribed deadlines
- Ability to attend all meetings, the dates of which should be published one year in advance

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers
If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.
Reflection is required to claim credits for an Experiential Learning Event. 2 CPD credits are claimable following reflection. In addition 1 or 2 credits are claimable for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.
Terms of reference
Setting the questions and providing all relevant question material for the MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment Sub-Committee which is held three times a year.
- Providing the Chair of the Examination and Assessment Committee and the Examination Department with drafts of all examination questions and material at least six months prior to MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment
- Reviewing the performance of all questions (stations) and to undertake the analysis of results
- Setting new questions in accordance with the published Curriculum and Syllabus
- Modifying questions, instructions to examiners, marking guidelines, role-players’ and lay examiners’ briefs
- Maintaining the bank of Clinical Assessment questions
- Attending the two London diets of the Clinical Assessment per year as circuit coordinators and/or examiners
- Maintaining the highest levels of question security at all times
- Advising on the training of examiners (clinical and lay) and role players
- Undertaking other MRCOG Part 3 Clinical Assessment matters, as required by the Examination and Assessment Committee
- Providing updates, on committee related issues, to the Examination and Assessment Committee
