Responsibilities of the Revalidation Lead include reviewing the College’s revalidation activities making recommendations to the Professional Development Committee where necessary, reviewing and updating speciality guidance and providing specialty-specific advice and guidance as appropriate
The Professional Development Committee is responsible for ensuring that the RCOG CPD Programme remains within national standards, including those of the GMC and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, reviewing and modifying the programme and identifying educational tools required for the purposes of the programme and meets three times a year (one in person and two remotely).
This appointment is for a three-year term beginning in June 2025 and will be appointed by CV, application form and interview.

RCOG Revalidation Lead, Professional Development Committee

Three years
The role is part of the RCOG Professional Development Committee. The Terms of Reference of the Committee are available on the PDC web page on the RCOG website. The role of the Committee is to oversee the management of the RCOG CPD programme for UK and overseas Fellows, Members and Associates.
The Revalidation Lead is responsible for overseeing the College’s activities in relation to revalidation and remediation.
- Regularly review the College’s revalidation activities making recommendations to the Professional Development Committee where necessary
- Review and update speciality guidance
- Provide specialty-specific advice and guidance as appropriate, to appraisees, appraisers and Responsible Officers in accordance with the RCOG Revalidation Help Desk procedures
- Develop and review the RCOG policy for remediation in conjunction with the Education Board
- Review any emerging themes from RCOG Invited Reviews and develop advice as appropriate
- Advise on supporting appraisal through relevant CPD
- Represent the College at relevant Academy of Medical Royal Colleges meetings
- Attend external meetings as necessary and feedback

Quarterly Professional Development Committee meetings (largely virtual).
The Revalidation Lead and the Committee Chair share the role of RCOG Representative on the AoMRC Academy Professional Development Committee, each attending two of the three meetings per year.
Regular attendance is expected at board meetings (in the event two or more consecutive meetings are missed, the committee member will be replaced).
This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.
The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term.
A new Revalidation Lead should be appointed six months before the end of the current holder’s term of office and they should work closely together during this time in order to facilitate a smooth take-over period.
Person specification
Essential
- MRCOG/FRCOG
- Registered with a licence to practise with GMC, in good standing
- Specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology in substantive UK NHS practice
- Evidence of annual appraisal
- Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years
- At least one fully completed CPD cycle
- Appraiser with understanding of all components of the appraisal process
Desirable
- Formal training or experience in medical education
- Formal training or experience in healthcare management
- Previous leadership role such as departmental lead/clinical director or appraisal/revalidation lead for the Trust
Essential
- Experience of training, appraisal and assessment processes within O&G
Desirable
- Experience as a Responsible Officer/Medical Appraisal Lead
- Experience in undertaking RCOG Invited Review
- Knowledge of responsibilities of doctors as described in Good Medical Practice
- Knowledge of principles of clinical governance, evidence-based medicine and clinical effectiveness
- Knowledge of the principles of revalidation
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Good oral, written, presentation and listening skills

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers
If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.
Reflection is required to claim credits for an Experiential Learning Event. 2 CPD credits are claimable following reflection. In addition 1 or 2 credits are claimable for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.
