Professor Murray Mitchell, Australia

Professor Murray Mitchell became Fellow ad eundem at the May 2015 Fellowship ceremony in Brisbane, Australia.

Professor Murray Mitchell is an Academic Professor at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research.

Professor Mitchell has had a long and eminent career in research into the mechanism of control of parturition, with relevance to the causes and possible prevention of preterm birth, post maturity and uterine pathologies in human and animal species. His findings of intrauterine infection as the major cause of preterm labour have changed management regimes and brought about introductions of new treatments.

He has held a Programme Grant from the HRC (New Zealand) around prevention and treatment of preterm delivery. Moreover, he was Co PI on a funded Centre of Research Excellence in NZ. Previously, he has held major grant funding from NIH (USA) and the MRC (UK).

In total he has received over $50 million in research funding. He has published 470 peer reviewed papers, 103 reviews or book chapters and 555 abstracts. He holds two patents and has supervised 29 PhD students, 7 post-doctoral fellows, 6 MD Fellowship students and over 40 Honours / Masters students. He has participated in the oral examination of 24 PhD students. He has an H index of 62.
