MRCOG Part 2 Examination Results – External Expert Review

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has published the final report of the External Expert Review. This was set up to investigate issues surrounding the results of the January 2018 Part 2 MRCOG examination, when a significant error led to 183 candidates initially being given the incorrect outcome for their examination attempt.

The Review Panel identified a number of issues that contributed to the error, and made a total of 12 recommendations for action. We are fully committed to implementing all of these recommendations in full.

We have also published a report setting out progress to date against the Review Panel’s recommendations, with projected timelines for when all of these will have been achieved.

The Examinations and Assessment Committee has responsibility for monitoring further progress against the recommendations and the College’s Audit and Risk Committee will continue to review progress.

The RCOG is determined to learn from our errors and put in place all necessary measures to address the issues identified. We would also like to take this opportunity to apologise once again for the impact our error had on exam candidates and our wider membership.

Terms of Reference:

  1. Investigate the preparation, delivery, marking, assessment & results communication of Part 2 MRCOG in Jan-Mar 2018.
  2. Report on problems, issues and errors in the running of this Part 2 examination and any errors reported in the past, relevant to this Review.
  3. Assess the contribution of software and outsourced data support services to Part 2 errors.
  4. Assess the College’s response in addressing the problems identified, including the adequacy of communications to candidates and the effectiveness of internal communications.
  5. Undertake a root cause analysis of all problems revealed and develop a risk profile of the Part 2 Examination.
  6. Publish interim Report with conclusions and recommendations for consultation.
  7. Publish final Report and Recommendations.
