Part 3 Exam: 29 and 30 April 2019

Statement: Friday 15 March 2019

The Part 3 MRCOG examination for April 2019 has seen more candidate demand for places than the capacity of 416 spaces, despite this being one of the largest Part 3 sittings the RCOG has run.

We cannot guarantee that every individual who wishes to attend in April is provided a place. However, we do recognise that UK National Training Number (NTN) holders in specialty training year 5 (ST5), who have been unable to secure a place for the April sitting, in some instances will be subject to an extension to training.

The RCOG is committed to ensuring that the training progression of such individuals is not halted due to examination capacity.

As such, we are pleased to confirm that all ST5 trainees who have not secured a place for the April 2019 exam, and will be subject to a training extension as a result, will be accommodated at the April examination.

The Examinations Department will contact those ST5 trainees during the week commencing Monday 18 March 2019 with an offer of a place at the April examination in London.

We recognise that there remain a cohort of disappointed candidates who have not been able to secure a place at the April sitting. In response to the growing demand, there will be 1274 places available in 2019 compared to 676 in 2017. Further expansion is planned for 2020, including expansion in examination centres outside of the UK.

For the November 2019 examination, there will be 728 spaces, which will be the largest Part 3 exam sitting ever run. All UK National Training Number (NTN) holders who are eligible to sit the Part 3 examination will be guaranteed a place at the November examination. The remaining places will be allocated in order of the date and time of each candidate’s online application.

Thank you to everybody who has provided feedback, all of which will be thoroughly reviewed and feed into our plans to develop capacity growth for the Part 3 MRCOG examination.

Statement: Friday 8 March 2019

The MRCOG Part 3 booking for the April 2019 examination opened on 7 March 2019 with a capacity of 416 places, which is one of the largest Part 3 sittings the RCOG has run, but unfortunately demand has been greater than capacity. The number of candidates wishing to attend the Part 3 examination has been continually rising and as per recent exams, we are unable to guarantee all those wishing to attend a space.

In reaction to the growing demand, we have significantly increased the annual number of available spaces. In 2019 there will be 1274 places available compared to 676 in 2017. Further expansion is planned for 2020, with growth managed carefully to maintain the validity and quality of the examination.

As space is limited, for the April exam sitting, it was agreed that the most equitable way to allocate places was in order of the date and time of each candidate’s online application. This has been communicated to candidates during 2019.

For the November 2019 examination, there will be 728 spaces, which will be the largest Part 3 exam sitting ever run. At the November examination, all UK National Training Number (NTN) holders who are eligible to sit the Part 3 examination will be guaranteed a place, with the remaining places allocated in order of the date and time of each candidate’s online application.

We understand the disappointment of those candidates who were unable to book a place on the April exam and thank them for their patience. We will be thoroughly reviewing all feedback we have received as we continue to grow the Part 3 examination.
