Part 3 MRCOG syllabus: Early pregnancy care

This page illustrates how the five core clinical skills can be applied to the early pregnancy care core module (module 16) for the Part 3 Clinical Assessment. 

Communicating with patients and families

  • Empathic approach to bereavement of early pregnancy loss and the effect on both partners
  • Ability to describe a clear and logical action plan and rationale for follow up

Communicating with colleagues

  • Ability to prioritise cases appropriately
    Ability to describe the differential diagnosis and formulate an appropriate management plan

Information gathering

  • Demonstrates ability to take a comprehensive history
  • Ability to request appropriate investigations and interpret those results and operative findings in order to develop a clear management plan and rationale for follow up
  • Summarises discussions succinctly and checks patient understanding at appropriate intervals

Patient safety

  • Demonstrates an understanding of risk management and clinical governance processes in relation to disorders of early pregnancy
  • Recognises limits of their clinical abilities and demonstrates an understanding of when to call for help and involve senior colleagues and other disciplines
  • Demonstrates an understanding of safe prescribing in early pregnancy including recognition of drug interaction, allergies and special circumstances e.g. renal impairment
  • Demonstrates understanding of principles of safe surgery including WHO safe surgery checklist

Applied clinical knowledge

  • Knowledge of early pregnancy complications including trophoblastic disease, ectopic pregnancy and recurrent miscarriage
  • Understanding of surgical techniques for managing early pregnancy complications
  • Demonstrates an ability to critically appraise medical media in relation to early pregnancy disorders
  • Demonstrates ability to present management options and their risks and benefits using non-directional counselling
  • Demonstrate understanding of the impacts of early pregnancy problems on future fertility and outcomes in future pregnancy
