Part 3 MRCOG syllabus: Sexual and reproductive health

This page illustrates how the five core clinical skills can be applied to the sexual and reproductive core module (module 15) for the Part 3 Clinical Assessment. 

Communicating with patients and families

  • Demonstrates tact, empathy, concern and respect for patients and maintains patient dignity at all times
  • Demonstrates a non-judgemental attitude when caring for patients
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate with teenagers and encouraging them to involve parents/guardians
  • Demonstrates respect for beliefs, values and sexual diversity
  • Ability to describe a clear and logical action plan and rationale for follow up

Communicating with colleagues

  • Ability to prioritise cases appropriately
  • Ability to describe the differential diagnosis and formulate an appropriate management plan

Information gathering

  • Demonstrates ability to take a comprehensive sexual health history
  • Ability to request appropriate investigations and interpret those results and operative findings in order to develop a clear management plan and rationale for follow up
  • Summarises discussions succinctly and checks patient understanding at appropriate intervals

Patient safety

  • Demonstrates an understanding of risk management and clinical governance processes in relation to sexual and reproductive health
  • Demonstrates an understanding of safe prescribing including recognition of drug interaction, allergies and special circumstances e.g. renal impairment

Applied clinical knowledge

  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health including contraception, UK MEC guidelines, unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections
  • Demonstrates understanding of the laws in relation to termination of pregnancy, STIs, consent, child protection and the Sexual Offences Act 2003
  • Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of counsellors, police, primary care, social workers, GUM specialists and the voluntary sector in sexual and reproductive health
