Plans, timelines and capacity for Part 3 exams in 2021

19 March 2021

Plans and timelines

Following the late postponement of our November 2020 exams, we have prioritised candidates that were due to sit and have now successfully run two fully remote exams, via the Osler Online platform.

We are now planning the running of the May and November 2021 exams in the UK and overseas. However, the hybrid and remote models limit the number of candidates that can sit the exam at any one time. Unfortunately, we are therefore limited to the number of places we can offer for our next scheduled exam in May 2021.

We can confirm that the following exam centres will be operating in May 2021:

Dates Location Delivery method Availability
17-20 May UK Fully remote UK trainees only
24-25 May Singapore Fully remote Candidates based in Singapore only
24-25 May Chennai, India Hybrid delivery India-based candidates only*
27-28 May Hong Kong Fully remote Candidates based in Hong Kong only
27-28 May Kolkata, India Hybrid delivery India-based candidates only*

*Any candidates based in India must ensure that the address information in their RCOG account is up to date by no later than Wednesday 24 March 2021.

Due to the limitation on available capacity, the exam centres above will only be able to accommodate candidates based in the respective countries listed. The exams team will be in contact directly with eligible candidates in each country to make arrangements to confirm their exam bookings.

All eligible candidates in the countries listed above will be contacted on Thursday 25 March 2021 with a booking code to give the opportunity to book an available exam place when booking opens on Tuesday 30 March 2021. Please note there are limited places available and not all eligible candidates will secure a seat.

Further dates and increased capacity

We do appreciate this will be hugely disappointing to all candidates based across the rest of the world. We would like to assure you that you are hugely important to us and we are doing our best to open up and expand capacity for our next exam diet in November 2021 and across 2022.

Please be aware we will be operating an additional exam sitting in February 2022, specifically aimed at catching up on the demand for places from our global O&G community.

Capacity at test centres – May 2021

Details on capacity for Part 3 candidates taking the May 2021 exam.

We are able to accommodate just over 200 candidates via a fully digital and remote diet.

We are in the process of finalising our list of all eligible UK trainees; these are currently with Heads of School for review and confirmation.

At present, early indications suggest we should be able to accommodate all UK trainees that are eligible to sit.

However, should the final eligible numbers be in excess of 200, we will prioritise candidates based on their level of training. All ST5 and above trainees will be provided with first priority, as well as those who need to sit the exam in May 2021 due to a personal reason such as impending maternity leave.

Any trainees unable to sit the exam in May 2021 will be prioritised to sit in November 2021.

We are aware there are a number of MTI trainees that are due to leave the UK by the time of the November 2021 exam. We are doing our utmost to support as many of these candidates as possible to sit the exam at the earliest opportunity. In the event there are still available spaces, we will consider MTI trainees to book into the May exam.

Assessment of Training (AoT) – deadline extended for UK trainees

Please note, we have received some late AOT applications from trainees hoping to sit the exam in May. The deadline to complete applications to be considered for the May 2021 exam was Monday 25 January 2021, as detailed on our Assessment of Training (AoT) page.

AOT applications can be completed at any time following passing the MRCOG Part 1, but must be completed by the deadline prior to the MRCOG Part 3 exam that candidates wish to sit. There is no need to wait until the Part 2 has been passed.

However, we understand that the pressures of the pandemic may have led to delays with candidates submitting their applications.

We have therefore made the decision to process all the late AOT applications we have received up until, and no later than, Monday 22 March 2021.

Any UK trainees with applications received within this extension will be considered for a place on the May exam in line with the parameters set out above.

There is capacity to accommodate 52 candidates in Kolkata and a further 52 candidates in Chennai.

Any candidates based in India must ensure that the address information in their RCOG account is up to date by no later than Wednesday 24 March 2021.

We will then be contacting all eligible candidates based in India to inform them of the booking process.

Please note, both centres will be operating a hybrid (partial-digital) delivery model, where all candidates will be required to travel to a central venue in either Kolkata or Chennai to sit the exam.

Candidates booking into available spaces must ensure they are able to safely travel to the exam venues. It is the responsibility of candidates to ensure they are adhering to national and state COVID-19 guidelines.
