Course syllabus for menopause ATSM

The menopause ATSM course syllabus below lists the minimum requirements for a course to be suitable for the theoretical component of this module. The course should last 2 days.

Course syllabus – lecture topics and timings

Demography, lifestyle and perimenopause

  • Welcome and introduction to ATSM on the menopause (15 minutes)
  • Cultural issues and the menopause (40 minutes)
  • Menopause – is weight gain inevitable? (30 minutes)
  • The perimenopause – contraception and therapeutic options (30 minutes)

Premature ovarian failure (POF) and osteoporosis

  • POF – aetiology, prediction and fertility options (30 minutes)
  • POF – symptoms, consequences and therapeutic options (30 minutes)
  • Osteoporosis – regulatory authorities, NICE, menopause societies (30 minutes)

Pathophysiology of menopause

  • Urogenital disorders (30 minutes)
  • Sexual changes/dysfunction (30 minutes)
  • Menopause symptoms (30 minutes)
  • Mood disorders – historical and modern perspective (30 minutes)


  • Minimising cardiovascular risk (30 minutes)
  • The effect of HRT on metabolic risk markers – does it matter? (30 minutes)
  • HRT and CHD – where to now? (30 minutes)

Endometrium and bone

  • Endometrium and bleeding problems (40 minutes)
  • Osteoporosis detection, prevention and treatment (40 minutes)

Cognitive function

  • Memory and cognition (30 minutes)
  • Dementia – are prevention and treatment possible with HRT? (30 minutes)

Pharmacokinetics, HRT and alternatives

  • HRT – new preparations and regimens (40 minutes)
  • Complementary therapies – any new data? (30 minutes)
  • Tissue-specific/-selective agents – current and future therapies (30 minutes)

Management and organisation

  • Multidisciplinary management of the menopause (60 minutes)
  • Risk management and medico-legal issues (30 minutes)

Specific diseases

  • HRT and breast disease (60 minutes)
  • Diabetes and other systemic diseases (40 minutes)

Androgens and practical management

  • The role of androgens (30 minutes)
  • Low sexual desire – practical management and case histories (40 minutes)
  • Practical problems and case histories (40 minutes)
