The 5 obstetric ATSMs have been re-written, updated and restructured so that they avoid duplication with the core curriculum and with other ATSMs whilst reflecting current practice. These are:
Each ATSM now has a curriculum that is directly mapped to each logbook competency. There is now clarity on the knowledge base that underpins each of the logbook targets along with examples of the most suitable evidence to provide to verify their attainment.
Clinical skills have been reorganized in a logical manner so that the management of key conditions requiring level 3 competencies are all in one place. Similarly, those skills typically acquired within a multidisciplinary setting, or those that are communication based or relate to less frequently seen but important clinical scenarios are now gathered together.
To do this each ATSM contains 4 or 5 modules that are referred to as Advanced Skills Modules (ASMs). There are 21 Obstetric ASMs spread across the 5 Obstetric ATSMs and some ASMs align to two ATSMs. If you have already completed an ASM you do not need to repeat it if it recurs within your other ATSM. Instead your supervisor simply confirms on your ePortfolio that this particular ASM has already been completed.
Completion of the ASM requires your supervisor to sign-off an anchor statement summarising the clinical skills that have been achieved. The ASM that make up a particular ATSM may be completed in any order or at any stage but each one must be finished in order to be awarded the overall ATSM. 2 ATSMs are still required for CCT.
The ASM approach allows stepwise progress within an ATSM to be recognised and any deficiencies more easily addressed. This may help with future clinical placements for any outstanding components. For example, you may have completed the key conditions ASM and have this signed off so it is then clear that work should be directed towards multidisciplinary team working, communication skills or the less frequently seen conditions.
