This page sets out the OSATS requirements for the intermediate ultrasound of early pregnancy complications module.
You have to be competent in:
Ultrasound diagnosis of normal early pregnancy
- Counsel patient about the procedure
- Appropriate probe selection and machine operation
- Identify and assess uterus
- Identify and assess gestational sac within the uterine cavity
- Look for an embryo/heart activity/yolk sac and measure if appropriate
- Measure mean gestational sac diameter (MGSD) and crown-rump length (CRL)
- Examine the adnexae and pouch of Douglas
- Interpret ultrasound findings in the context of the clinical setting
- Communicate results to patient and advise on management as appropriate
- Complete written structured ultrasound report
- Arrange appropriate follow-up
Ultrasound diagnosis of early embryonic demise
- Counsel patient about the procedure
- Appropriate probe selection and machine operation
- Identify and assess uterus
- Identify and assess gestational sac within the uterine cavity
- Look for an embryo/heart activity/yolk sac and measure if appropriate
- Measure mean gestational sac diameter (MGSD) and crown-rump length (CRL)
- Examine the adnexae and pouch of Douglas
- Interpret ultrasound findings in the context of the clinical setting

Ultrasound diagnosis of a woman with suspected ectopic pregnancy
- Counsel patient about the procedure
- Appropriate probe selection and machine operation
- Identify and assess the uterus and endometrium
- Identify and assess the ovaries and corpus luteum
- Assess pouch of Douglas
- Examine adnexae
- Identify and measure ectopic pregnancy
- Examine for the presence of embryo and cardiac activity
- Interpret ultrasound findings in the context of the clinical setting
- Communicate results to patient and advise on management as appropriate
- Complete written structured ultrasound report
- Arrange appropriate follow-up
