This is one of the recommendations from the ‘departmental’ section of the RCOG/RCM undermining toolkit.
Understand your organisation
Gain information about the degree of undermining behaviour in your department. Feedback is available from the GMC trainee survey or local school surveys. Trust staff survey reports and information from Supervisors of Midwives may also be helpful.
Observation of teams within birth environments has also been shown to provide a valuable insight into behaviour. Furthermore, staff could be encouraged to comment on the leadership climate within their own birthing environments using a questionnaire (Word document, 68 kb) developed by the Clinical Leaders Network within South Central.
This information will allow your multiprofessional champions to identify and target specific problem areas. For example, University Hospital Southampton carried out an investigation into the attitude of health professionals to team working on the delivery suite using an adaptation of the Human Factors Attitude Questionnaire (Word document, 72 kb).
Oxford Deanery trainees conduct their own trainee survey (PDF, 188 kb) each November, so concerns can be raised and actioned early in the training year. The survey includes questions about undermining.
