Recruitment and selection of staff with appropriate attitudes to undermining and bullying
Values-based recruitment of students and staff is a key priority for the wider NHS in the wake of the Francis and Berwick reports.
Health Education England’s project aims to ensure that all students recruited into health-related professions are chosen with values as a key part of their selection. The project encourages organisations to follow the same model for employees. Key to this is the recruitment of leaders who demonstrate those values.
Organisations should be wary of recruiting leaders with either aggressive or laissez-faire management styles, which can be associated with higher levels of undermining and bullying in their departments or teams. The challenge will be developing a process which supports this.
