D&E Workshop for Surgical Abortion after the 1st Trimester

Fee: £150 incl VAT
Sunday 16 June 1400–1800
Max capacity 30

Second trimester fetal demise, inevitable miscarriage, and abnormal or undesired pregnancy are common problems for the obstetricians and gynaecologists. Dilation and evacuation (D&E) is the safest method of uterine evacuation in the second trimester for any of these conditions. In addition to its safety and effectiveness, advantages of D&E for both the woman and provider are that the procedure can be scheduled as a day case and operating times are short (about 10-15 minutes).   The efficiency and predictability of D&E are also beneficial where a woman requires an abortion for maternal medical conditions or complications of pregnancy, such as preterm premature rupture of membranes, which could deteriorate during the course of a lengthy medical induction.   Lastly, D&E is a critical back-up for failed second trimester medical abortion.

This workshop will provide a comparison of D&E vs medical abortion, an overview of the practical requirements of D&E including pre-operative assessment and planning, instruments, cervical preparation, pain control, procedural steps, immediate post-abortion care, and identification and management of complications.   We will also discuss developing a D&E service and explore participants concerns and perceived barriers to D&E provision in their settings.
