CPD for international doctors

This page provides information for doctors practising outside the UK who wish to participate in the RCOG’s continuing professional development (CPD) programme.

Doctors have the responsibility, wherever they practise, always to remain competent, up to date and fit to practise in their work. Professional ethics is at the heart of continuing professional development and, as a responsible doctor, you should participate in CPD to do your best for your patients and women’s health.

One of the College’s main objectives is promoting standards of care both nationally and internationally. To help achieve this aim, we provide a CPD programme for those practising O&G or its subspecialties. You may find that participating in such a scheme is helpful to maintain high standards in your area of practice. We encourage all our Fellows and Members to engage in CPD activities.

You may be participating in your local CPD programme. However, if you are unable to do so, you are welcome to register on the RCOG’s CPD programme, even if you are not a member of the College.

The RCOG’s CPD programme for international doctors

For information about what the RCOG’s CPD programme entails, please visit the CPD programme section of this site or download the CPD guide (below).

The RCOG CPD Guide provides a detailed overview of our continuing professional development programme.

The College is fully aware of global women’s health issues, and wants to make its CPD programme more accessible and relevant to international doctors. We would like our programme to be a useful tool for your continuing education and professional development wherever you are practising.

If you register on the programme, you will be using the same CPD guide as UK doctors, for the time being. The College, however, appreciates that international doctors practise in diverse contexts; for this reason we intend to produce a separate CPD guide for you which recognises your diverse educational needs. In the meantime, we have put in place further flexibility for international doctors participating or wishing to participate in our programme.

You will note that, if you register on the CPD programme, you can select from a variety of different educational activities, including participation in the questions provided in The Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (TOG), eLearning and reflection.

As an international participant, you will no longer be asked to attend a mandatory meeting, although we do recommend that you attend national or international conferences relevant to your scope of work – please see a short list of upcoming non-RCOG international conferences and events. If you can’t access meetings and conferences in your region, you could use eLearning and knowledge-based assessment opportunities to keep up to date.

The RCOG’s CPD programme is divided into four categories. Please select activities that allow you to accrue a certain amount of CPD credits within each category to ensure that your programme remains balanced.  If you’re unable to accrue sufficient credits in a category, you can use the questions provided in The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) as a ‘wild card’ – for example, you can use TOG CPD credits in a CPD category where you have a credit shortfall.
