The course is specifically designed for adult learners. It is very interactive, with lots of small group work and breakout sessions. It is essential for all clinical trainers and is led by an expert faculty.

The course will equip you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to enhance your teaching sessions, to give more effective feedback, improve your assessment technique and give you experience of performing difficult appraisals.

The course is suitable for all consultants and for those trainees in their final 2 years. It is recognised as fulfilling the requirements to be an educational and clinical supervisor. It is also recognised for the theoretical component of the ‘Medical Education’ Advanced Training Skills Module (ATSM). This course is valid for three years, and must be completed prior to completion of the practical component of the ATSMs.

Learning objectives

After completing this course you will:

  • Know when and how to use different teaching methods
  • Be able to teach and train in different clinical settings
  • Understand the importance and principles of feedback
  • Be able to develop effective learning environments
  • Be able to design and organise a teaching programme
  • Understand the principles of appraisal and assessment
  • Understand principles and importance of reflective practice and evaluation
  • Understand structure of postgraduate training and need for quality control of education
