Joint RCOG/BMFMS Meeting

bmfmsThis course is suitable for any clinician who spends a significant amount of time on the labour ward, or has a major interest in risk management and clinical governance, audit and guidelines, neonatology, anaesthetics, medical disorders, to practical obstetrics skills and how to run skills and drills training in your own unit.

The programme includes a variety of authoritative speakers with ample time for discussion, debate and networking throughout the course of the meeting.

This meeting is also recognised for and aims to cover the theoretical component of the "Advanced Labour Ward Practice" and "Labour Ward Lead" Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSMs), which are undertaken as a ST6/7. The courses are valid for three years, and must be completed prior to completion of the practical component of the ATSMs. Those undertaking the "Labour Ward Lead" ATSM must also complete the "Advanced Labour Ward Practice" ATSM, and should therefore attend all 4 days.

Learning objectives

  • Gain the knowledge and understanding to safely support the physiological processes of labour and birth
  • Understand the importance of promoting and maintaining safe and personalised care for women and supporting decision making
  • Have gained understanding of how to measure and improve care on labour ward
  • Recognise and manage the unwell, pregnant woman including those with medical problems
  • Have updated your knowledge in a range of practical obstetric skills including relevant Ultrasound skills
  • Have gained a thorough understanding of analgesia and anaesthesia in labour and birth
  • Have gained a thorough understanding of neonatal resuscitation and neonatal outcomes
  • Understand the role of the labour ward lead - particularly in relation to risk management, clinical governance, team dynamics, training
  • Gain the knowledge and understanding to safely support the physiological processes of labour and birth
  • Understand the importance of promoting and maintaining safe and personalised care for women and supporting decision making

  • Those who are registered, or plan to register for the 'Advanced Labour Ward Practice' and 'Labour Ward Lead' ATSMs
  • All Trainees, Consultants and SAS Doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Midwives and Clinicians who spend a significant amount of time on the labour war
