Professional Nurse, Sister Darniel Arendse, from Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Clinic
In May, Professional Nurse, Sister Darniel Arendse, from Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Clinic was certified competent in providing first trimester surgical termination of pregnancy (MVA). In addition, she was also certified as competent to provide postabortion Intrauterine Devices (IUDs), ensuring that women who have received abortion care have access to long acting reversible family planning methods (LARCs), should they so choose. Before attending the Leading Safe Choices Comprehensive Abortion Care Training (CAC), Sister Arendse was providing abortion care services at Mitchell’s Plain but could only provide medical abortions as she had no training in MVA. A doctor had to be outsourced to come to Mitchell’s Plain to provide this service, which sometimes led to delays in women receiving the care they needed. Through Leading Safe Choices, Sister Arendse received training and on the job supervision until she was deemed competent to provide this service and until she felt comfortable to work independently. She is now doing a fantastic job running fully comprehensive abortion care services in her health facility, with confidence.
