Background information

The Edna Adan Hospital was the first to start training nurses and midwives in 2001, followed by the training of other health professionals in Somaliland.

During that time, medical doctors were trained at Amoud and Hargeisa Universities but due to a small output of qualified professionals, the Edna Adan University added the training of medical doctors to the courses it offers.

Applicants accepted on to the courses at Edna Adan University hold an A or B+ pass grade in their secondary school examinations, and then sit for an entrance examination to the University.

Of the first 116 applicants, 42 passed the entrance examination. They then embarked upon pre-medical education/foundation year training.

After one year, these students took another examination and the top 19 students were accepted into year one of medical training.

A second group are now progressing through their foundation year and the top 20 will go into the Edna Adan Medical School.

Currently, international staff at the hospital consist of; one American, one Norwegian, and one Kenyan doctor.
