Leading Safe Choices

Leading Safe Choices logoThe RCOG Leading Safe Choices initiative aims to strengthen the competence and raise the standing of family planning professionals in South Africa and Tanzania. This section of the site provides information about this initiative.

Expanding contraceptive choice, particularly long-acting reversible methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants, and improving access to safe abortion services dramatically improves the health of women and their children.

The RCOG Leading Safe Choices initiative aims to put the evidence into practice by strengthening the competence and raising the standing of family planning and abortion care professionals. In collaboration with colleagues in South Africa and Tanzania, we will promote best practices in postpartum contraception and comprehensive abortion care (CAC) in South Africa, and comprehensive post-abortion care (CPAC) in Tanzania.

Introducing the Leading Safe Choices initiative

Watch Professor Lesley Regan, RCOG Vice President of Strategic Development and Leading Safe Choices Programme Director, introduce the initiative.

Our approach

The initiative will use a three-pronged approach:

  • Develop and disseminate Best Practice Papers on postpartum family planning and comprehensive abortion care
  • Work on skills building and mentorship in family planning and CAC/CPAC, through training and support systems
  • Enable focus countries to professionalise family planning and CAC/CPAC services with accreditation and certification systems
