Each Baby Counts + Learn and Support

Each Baby Counts + Learn and Support is a joint initiative between the RCOG and Royal College of Midwives (RCM) to help improve maternity care in England.

The project will look at issues around workplace culture and staff wellbeing. We are working with a number of NHS Trusts in England to develop, test and evaluate new approaches to promote a more positive and supportive workplace environment.

We want the UK to become known as the safest place in the world to give birth. Ensuring a positive workplace culture where all staff feel supported and respected will ultimately contribute towards safer care and outcomes for women and their babies.

We have appointed 16 healthcare professionals, all of whom are midwives and obstetricians, to lead this work and test interventions within their own NHS Trusts. Find out more about the Each Baby Counts + Learn and Support project team.

Improving maternity care in England

Each Baby Counts + Learn and Support is one of a number of initiatives focusing on promoting good practice through safer care as part of NHS England’s Maternity Transformation Programme.

The project has close links with the Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement programme, which will help to ensure consistent and sustained safety systems are implemented across the NHS in England.

Our project is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care until December 2021 and evolved from recommendations made by our original Each Baby Counts programme. This national quality improvement programme launched in 2015 to reduce the number of babies who die or are left severely disabled as a result of incidents occurring during term labour.
