Information on forced marriage and coercive relationships

News 22 March 2013

In March, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) hosted the End Forced Marriages event to mark International Women’s Day 2013. The event was designed to help raise awareness about the dangers of forced marriage and discuss related issues such as honour-based and domestic violence.

Baroness Tonge, Chair of the UK APPG for Population, Development and Reproductive health, presented the findings from the APPG report on Child Marriage. Carla Thomas from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Forced Marriage Unit, provided an update on community-based government initiatives.

Jasvinder Sanghera (Karma Nirvana) and Diana Nammi (IKWRO) spoke about the support services for women. Dr Sonji Clarke offered information for clinicians dealing with patients in coercive relationships.

A summary of Dr Clarke’s presentation with contact details for support services can be read here: Maternity services: Dealing with coercive relationships and forced marriage.
